The Mirror Has Two Faces

By:  Chris Avidano

The mirror has two faces,

Yours and mine,

The mirror has two hearts,

Trying to beat in rhythm and rhyme.

I look to your face,

By looking into the mirror,

But when I finally find you there,

I no longer see what I hoped for.

The problem lies within me,

As it always has in the past,

For I know deep in my heart,

Time with you will never last.

I would die to hear you say,

Words of compassion and affection,

But I have to be worthy of them first,

And that is something I feel I will never achieve.

So, in looking into the mirror,

And seeing your handsome face,

I finally realize you are out of my league,

And I will always be out of place.

I can try to pretend to be who I am not,

But what is the use in going through life being fake,

For the past will always catch up with you,

Tearing down the walls you build to keep relying on.

I have always lived in a dream world,

Thinking that I will always get all that I desire,

But when it boils down to it,

No one ever captures every fire.

So, with one swift action,

I put an end to this seeming misery,

And shatter the glass of the mirror,

Hoping to free our faces of our hearts.

But deep down I regret what I have done,

For I never really gave it a chance,

Because I believed that it was always going to be,

Like the dream of a perfect slow dance.

I scramble to gather the pieces I shattered,

Hoping that I can put them back together,

And recapture that magic I was captivated by,

When I first looked into the mirror.

The mirror has two faces, once again,

Yours and mine,

The mirror has two hearts, once again,

Giving another attempt at a rhythm and rhyme.
